Question Time Event: ‘Fairer Taxes for the Common Good?’

Saturday March 21st 2020

The next Lansdowne Question Time event entitled ‘Fairer Taxes for the Common Good’ will be held on Saturday March 21st beginning at 7.30 pm. The event will be chaired by Philip Wetherall and the panellists are Rev. David Haslam (representing Church Action for Tax Justice), Samantha Charles (Labour Candidate for West Worcestershire), Mike Hayes (advocate for the reform of land taxes) and David Francis (National Head of Tax Investigations and Disputes at Grant Thornton UK LLP).

The UK tax system is in need of major structural reform if it is to meet the challenges of the future (Institute for Government July 2019).  The Government continues to propose tax cuts but that does not address the problems.  Structural tax reform is needed to reflect changes in the economy. Growing public spending pressures and declining revenues pose a stark choice.  Without raising taxes or borrowing more, the scale and scope of public services will need to shrink even further.  Our flawed tax system makes it harder to address this choice and calls out for reform.

The panel will give their perspective on this issue followed by a Question and Answer session with the audience.  Please come along and learn about this vital aspect of life in the 21st century.
